As a parent, you wish to provide your Little One with nothing but the BEST! Best clothes, best toys, and most important best of nutrition! I strongly doubt if the store-bought ready-made baby food could do complete justice to nutrition no matter how authentic it claims itself to be. After all they are processed foods. That is why I wanted to prepare all my baby’s food at home from scratch.
After few experiments, I realised that preparing on daily basis wasn’t going to work out. So preparing in batches seemed to be the ideal solution. But how to store them was another question. So I did my research and came with this method which I would like to share.
All you need to do is shop for the veggies and fruits you wish to give your baby from the grocery. I prefer buying only organic stuff. My grocery list includes:
- 3-4 Bananas
- 2 Avocados
- 3-4 Apples
- 3 Pears
- 2 Sweet Potatoes
- 1 Butternut Squash
- 3 Carrots
- 1/2 lb Green Beans
- 1 lb bag of frozen Green Peas
For preparation and storage, you need:
- A Blender
- Ice Cube Trays
- Ziploc Bags
Let’s begin!
Bananas & Avocados: Easiest of all! Just mush up with a fork and feed! I used NUK Mash and Serve Bowl during the early stage to mash them fine.
Apple & Pear: Wash well, peel, cut into cubes, steam on medium for 10 mins, cool and put in the blender.
Now the Veggies!
For carrots, sweet potatoes, squashes: Peel, wash, cut into medium-sized cubes, boil until fork tender, cool and put in the blender
You could also choose to bake the squash and sweet potato at 400F for 45 mins
Green beans: Wash, cut the ends, boil until fork tender, cool and put in the blender
Green peas: Boil until tender, cool and put in the blender
Then comes the storage!
Transfer the puree into the ice-cube trays and freeze. After freezing, transfer them into Ziploc bags and label them with the date. Place them back in the freezer.
Grab the desired number of cubes and microwave for 30 seconds before serving. If you want to avoid microwaving, just defrost them by refrigerating overnight or at least half a day before serving.
Note
- You could prepare 1 or 2 items per day during your baby’s nap time
- I usually serve veggies with rice cereal and fruits with oatmeal. This way I require 2 cubes (approx 2 oz) per meal. ( I feed solids to my baby twice a day)
- Thus I have adequate food for 10-15 days.
- Both the cubes need not be the same. I mix and match veggies like sweet potato beans/ carrot, peas-carrot, squash- peas etc. In case of fruits, I like giving apple-pear, apple-banana, and avocado-banana. Personally I don’t believe in combining fruits and veggies together as the digestion time for each is different.
This way you can rest assured that your baby is getting a nutritious meal each and every day!!!
Super good dear..Greatly Appreciated!
